The Opportunity

Empowerment through Education

India has 400 million children, yet 35 million are unable to access education due to poverty, gender inequality, and other barriers.

Limited schools, teacher shortages, and language differences make learning even harder. Many children are forced into labor, early marriage, or exploitation. Education can reduce these challenges by up to 90%, giving children stability, opportunity, and hope for a better future.

India has the largest illiterate population—237 million adults can’t read or write. Most schools are government-run but lack funding, staff, and resources. To bring change to India and provide hope for the future, we need to improve the literacy rates. Literacy builds stronger communities, improves health, supports gender equality, and pulls people out of poverty.

Our Strategy

Providing an education, a warm meal each day, and basic medical check-ups gives children the tools to break the cycle of poverty and hope for the future.

Calcutta Mercy currently supports over 100 schools with 32,000 students enrolled. Cry of India, our child sponsorship program, identifies locations and schools throughout India, and children in need of sponsorship.

We have partnered with BrightPoint for Children (BPFC) to manage child sponsorships online. You can securely select a child to sponsor, set up monthly giving, and communicate with your child—all through this portal. This enhances accuracy, broadens our impact in India, and provides better account management and communication.
